Title: Matrimony Plea Artist: Kerkovius, Ruth (Latvia, Born, 1921 - Resides, New York) Date: 1965 Medium: Original Aquatint and Deep Etching in Colors Note: Ruth Kerkovius: A twentieth century American printmaker and painter, Ruth Kerkovius received her initial training in Munich, Germany, where she worked primarily as a costume designer for the theatre. She settled permanently in New York shortly after the end of the Second World War and studied there at both the Art Students' League and at the School of Visual Arts. Ruth Kerkovius then concentrated upon printmaking techniques at the famous Pratt Graphic Art Center, under Fransconi. She was later awarded a fellowship from this institution to work under Michael Ponce de Leon. Since 1962, Ruth Kerkovius's etchings, woodcuts and lithographs have been included in exhibitions with such major institutions as the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Silverman Guild of Artists, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Library of Congress. Her graphic art is now included in such collections as the University of Chicago, Wesleyan University, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. During the mid and latter 1960's Ruth Kerkovius experimented with color aquatints and etchings. These were printed in very small numbers. This print, for example, was probably produced only in a handful of Artist Proof impressions. On the verso of this original aquatint and etching she has written, "40/40" with no more available. Edition: 40/40 The Last one produced of this printing Size: 3 5/8 x 5 1/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
